SENSITIVE FERNS
Matt talks about sensitive ferns on this week’s episode. After further research, everything he thought he knew is put into question. Onoclea sensibilis is known as the sensitive fern, but it is unclear of these plants curl up when touched, the way Matt is used to! It is up to you, dear listener, to decide what the sensitive fern truly is.
PHOBOPHOBIA
This week on the podcast we discuss a variety of common phobias (well, for the most part they’re common). In alphabetical order they are: Achievemephobia (fear of success), Acrophobia (fear of heights), Aerophobia (fear of flying), Agoraphobia (fear of large, crowded spaces), Atychiphobia (fear of failure), Claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), Cynophobia (fear of dogs), Elurophobia (fear of cats), Hemephobia (fear of blood), Hydrophobia (fear of water), Octophobia (fear of the figure eight), and Pteridophobia (fear of ferns).
WENDIGO
The Wendigo is a mythological (maybe…) creature from Native American lore (specifically Algonquian tribes). These monsters are often described as a possessed human or an evil spirit who may murder or cannibalize its unfortunate victims. Regardless of whether it is human or spirit, it isn’t something you want to tangle with!
SLENDERMAN
Spoilers: Slenderman isn’t real - he was created on the internet (go figure) in approximately 2009. Faceless and wearing a suit, Slenderman is a tall, slender, man (ha). His penchant for stalking and traumatizing his victims lends his story well to the many stories, video games, and movies he is a part of.

THE MASK
Spanning 3 seasons with 54 episodes, The Mask: Animated Series ran from 1995 - 1997. Matt was about 4 years old, which may explain why he was so afraid of this show! Without a real plot, the show revolves around Stanley Ipkiss and his constant struggle against the titular Mask. The Mask gives Stanley supernatural powers and turns him from a meek and mild-mannered man to a mischievous superhero type.
THE DARK KNIGHT
Lea and Matt discuss the Dark Knight in this week’s episode in regards to the origins of Bruce Wayne’s superhero moniker, ‘Batman.’ As a child, Bruce learns a lesson about fear and how to confront it, which later becomes part of his training from Ra’s al Ghul. This film trilogy, beginning with Batman Begins in 2005 and ending with the Dark Knight Rises in 2012, was wildly successful and is most commonly remembered for Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker.
THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) is a stop-motion film, directed by Tim Burton. It follows Jack Skellington, a man who grows bored with Halloween and wants something more out of life. Eventually stumbling across portals to other holidays, he becomes obsessed with Christmas but can’t quite leave his Halloween roots behind him… This movie also begs the question - is it a Halloween film or a Christmas classic?
ELIZABETH SMART
Elizabeth Smart is a child safety activist. At the age of 14, she was abducted from her home in Salt Lake City. She was missing for nine months until police were able to locate and rescue her. Since her rescue, she has completed her Bachelor’s degree, become an activist, and currently works as a journalist for ABC News.

CERSEI LANNISTER
The Queen of Westoros, this Lannister lion is absolutely fierce for her own interests and the interests the benefit er children. She does some pretty questionable things, but one thing that cannot be questions is Lena Headey’s talent in the HBO version of Game of Thrones. Cersei’s only true love is family (lol).
SANSA STARK
Starting as a meek but passionate child, Sansa turns into a truly fearsome and courageous ruler of House Stark. Played by the equally fierce Sophie Turner, I would not want to be her (either of them!) bad side.
JON SNOW
Arguably one of the most purely good characters in the entire Game of Thrones universe, Jon constantly finds himself torn between duty and the things he wants in life. Kit Harrington perfectly portrays this cornerstone of the series (and he totally married Ygritte in real life!).
TYRION LANNISTER
Everyone’s favorite character (c’mon, admit it), Tyrion uses his wit and wile to stay alive in a dangerous universe. Peter Dinklage portrays this sarcastic Lannister as no one else could.

GREEK GOD ARIES
Ares is mentioned as one of Matt’s favorite gods from Greek mythology (favorite titan you ask? Chronus, for sure!). It is definitely news to Matt that Ares and Aries are different. In the Greek pantheon, Ares is the god of war, son of Zues and Hera, and he represents the dangerous balance between valor and insatiability. Ares is also Mars in the Roman pantheon.
FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE
The Horsemen of the Apocalypse are mentioned from a mythos perspective in the podcast this week. First appearing in the New Testament of the Bible, the Four Horsemen are thought to be a precursor to an apocalypse that would wipe out a quarter of the world's population through War, Famine, Death, and Pestilence. They are often pictured riding forth on a White horse, Red horse, Black horse, and Pale horse. Spooky stuff but not quite as scary as Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling!
MARS
Mars is the planet that represents taking action, getting what we want, driving force, sex, courage, initiative, desires, overcoming obstacles, and how active we are. This is the place to look to understand how you or another might assert yourself in conflicts with others.
MOON
The moon rules our emotions, moods, and feelings. This celestial body tells us what gives a person their sense of security, and where to find it. It describes how sensitive we are and how we naturally interact with our surroundings. This is the place to look to understand how you or another might react to conflict.

This pair of episodes is named after David Bowie's 1973 hit song 'Changes'. The lyrics are used to describe Bowie’s changing personality, changing music, and the changing of the world around him.

MAKING FIENDS
Making Fiends is a webseries, created in 2003, that was eventually aired on Nickelodeon in 2008. It features Vendetta, a young girl with the power to make fiends, and the new girl at her school, Charlotte. While Matt was busy watching Homestar Runner, Lea was watching Vendetta trying to murder Charlotte in the horror comedy miniseries.
READING RAINBOW
Reading Rainbow was a PBS program that ran from 1983 to 2006 with a 155 episode archive. Encouraging children to read, the show featured Lavar Burton and a host of children guests sharing their favorite books.
PULP FICTION
This week Lea is quite taken aback by the fact that her Pulp Fiction reference flies straight over Matt’s head. “Look at the big brain on Brad” comes from Tarintino’s third film, released in 1994. Lea accidentally says Brett instead of Brad, due to a popular parody of this famous scene.
THE KINGKILLER CHRONICLES
The Kingkiller Chronicles, by Patrick Rothfuss, follows an adventurer bard named Kvothe. The story follows Kvothe in the past and present day. In the present, we see Kvothe dealing with his dark and dangerous post while, in the past, we see the events that lead to that same dark danger. Currently there are three released books in the main series, with many more to come.

This chart shows the bell curve with a long tail mentioned in the episode. In the episode we examine the reasons for this curve. It is largely due to the balance of independence and responsibility.

Sutton Foster is the Tony award winning actress that Matt’s friends all wanted to be. She starred in Thoroughly Modern Millie and Little Women, which are both shows that Matt worked on in high school (do not get him started on Little Women).
MOONSHOT THINKING
In the fourth episode, Matt mentions moonshot thinking in innovation. While he messes up the phrasing, the mentality stays the same. This video describes the idea of being bold and taking initiative. One person’s childlike wonder led to manned flight, it led to climbing Mt. Everest, it led us to the moon. Never lose your childlike wonder!
ASTRAEA
Lea mentions Astraea in relation to Virgo. She is the Greek goddess of justice, innocence, purity, and prevision. As Lea stated, she was the last immortal to live with the humans before ascending to the stars and becoming the constellation Virgo.

Godzilla, known as King of the Monsters, first came to the film scene in 1954 in Japan. It's name comes from a mix of the Japanese words for Gorilla and Whale. A little known fact is that Godzilla is also an excellent name for children...if you ask the children...
